Before you get too far in the design process, be sure to know what type of patch you want. We offer five patch types.
There’s plenty to keep in mind as you create a custom patch design. Size, shape, colors, and artwork elements are just the start! But before you get too far in the design process, be sure to know what type of patch you want. We offer five patch types. From embroidered classics to modern PVC options, each patch type offers distinct advantages depending on how you plan on using them. Here’s a breakdown of all our patch types to help you choose the best fit for your needs!
75% Embroidered Patches
These look much like the traditional patches many people first think of when coming up with a patch design. They are 75% embroidered, allowing for a mix of embroidered and mesh background elements. They offer a balanced look with visible mesh areas that complement the embroidered design. The main benefits include how cost effective these patches are, the textured and bold appearance that is perfect for sport teams, school uniforms, and for logos and branding.
100% Embroidered Patches
Like 75% embroidered patches, these look just like the traditional patches you see on uniforms, bags, and jackets. What sets them apart from other embroidered patches is that the entire surface of the patch is covered in embroidery. This creates a vibrant, high-quality look. They’re ideal for designs with more detail and bold colors. The fully embroidered coverage gives you more room to create intricate designs, making it perfect for corporate logo patches, uniform patches, and logo patches with lots of detail.
PVC Patches
PVC patches are made from durable, flexible plastic, offering a modern alternative to traditional embroidered patches. They’re also waterproof and highly resistant to fading or fraying! We’ve seen these patches used for outdoor gear, tactical uniforms, and other rugged applications. Some baseball teams create PVC logos for their helmets, and schools will sometimes create PVC patches and keychains for their students! Another major benefit of PVC patches is the ability to create 3D artwork, giving your patches extra depth and detail that’s impossible to recreate with traditional embroidered patches.
Woven Patches
Woven patches use thinner threads to create highly detailed designs with a smooth surface. Unlike embroidered patches, these patches do not have raised, embroidered thread details. However, the smooth surface allows for extra precision when creating artwork. Woven patches are perfect for customers who need to capture small or fine details. They have a sleek profile and professional finish that is ideal for fashion labels, detailed logos, and lightweight applications.
Heat Transfer Patches
Heat transfer patches are created using heat and pressure to embed a design onto the surface of a mesh patch. There is no need to weave or embroider thread in the design, making it possible to achieve photo-realistic artwork, designs with vibrant, overlapping colors, and designs with small details below the minimum threshold for threaded designs. Many of our customers use heat transfer patches for event merchandise, promotional items, and for patches that require a high level of realistic detail and color.
Your ideal patch type depends on your specific needs. For a classic look, 75% and 100% embroidered patches are your best bet. PVC patches are ideal for any patch intended for outdoor use. They are waterproof, flexible, and offer the ability to create 3D artwork. If you have an intricate design, woven and heat transfer patches are both excellent choices. A woven patch uses thread to create a design, giving it a more classic appeal, while heat transfer patches give you the ability to create photo-realistic artwork.
By understanding the strengths of each patch type, you can confidently choose a patch that aligns with your vision and purpose, ensuring your design stands out in the best way possible. If you’re feeling inspired, fill out our free quote form and get started on a design of your own!
